Carb Back-Loading™ / Nicotine Protocol
« on: January 17, 2013, 10:58:59 AM »
It's been a while since I've trolled the forums so forgive me if this question has already been brought up...

I'm currently employing nicotine as part of a Hybrid SA/IF protocol. It's very similar to what the guys at Propane are doing.. Anyways, i'm consuming essentially only two meals per day, a large Pro/Fat only meal around 11-12 and another large carb laden meal asap postworkout, with a final small protein shake around 2-3 hrs post-workout.

My question is two-fold:
1st- Maybe it's mentioned somewhere else, but how long before ingesting carbs is it acceptable to have the gum? If I chew at 1pm, train at 3pm and start carbs at 6pm (around four to five hours later) is it too soon? Is there a magic number, like 4 hours, to avoid the adverse effects mentioned in the article?

2nd - The basic protocol is something along the lines of 1mg in am and 1 mg afternoon. However, at the end of the article he quickly says "personally I chew a 2mg piece first thing in the morning every other day," So which is the better way to go, what he says or what HE does?

I'd appreciate any thoughts/feedback.

I saw Kiefer wearing a DH shirt in the HIIT/Post thanksgiving video... IS that new apparel? Is there ever gonna be DH apparel? C'mon throw us a bone here!

I try and do searches but the information is kind of all over the place sometimes (not all of the time) and often changes with different posts.
I appreciate all of you who take the time to organize the forum and answer questions.

+1. I've been known to ask some questions as well, but recently it only occurs when I can't find what I'm looking for with the search function. Due to the exact factors Tex stated (tons of new threads everyday) when you use the search function up you get 500 different threads, some of them with simply the word your searching for in it. For example i was looking for a specific answer to an AM lifting question and when I typed in "AM Training" every single post that had the word "am" in it popped up  :o

Def like the idea of a FAQ thread (I'm assuming it'll be more streamlined than the current FAQ section?), the less cluttered everything is the better. And again mad props to all the moderators that keep things running here, your work does not go unappreciated.

I was 245lbs @ 22% BF, did CBL for 6 weeks and I lost 15 pounds and added 5lbs of muscle. I'm now 230 and under 17%. I'm doing excatly as the book states. So far I consider myself a success story?

5
Damn, glad I'm not the only one haha.

I consider a few of the doubters "friends" so I'm constantly in a struggle to convince them to give CBL a shot. Good thoughts on showing the references, I suppose if that in combination with my results doesn't at least pique their curiosity, then I'll just have to accept their stubborness.

I take them out to eat and either have as much bacon as I can order or the biggest dessert I can depending on if I've trained or not that day.

You sir, are a wise man.

I'm in the best shape of my life due to CBL. 17% BF and dropping (down from 23%), strong as I've been since college ball and eating food I crave whenever I want. Heck, makes me more motivated because sometimes I'll just workout an extra day so I can backload that night.

With that being said I've recently been getting "have you lost weight" followed by "how?" The few instances when I've had time to explain, I've gotten looks of disbelief, confusion or the worst, jealousy. The last is the one I struggle to deal with. Trainers and friends who have lost weight the old fashioned way (Read: chicken, rice and a piece of lettuce) can't wrap their head around CBL. Even when i point them to the website, they refuse to investigate. Normally they claim it's a gimmick or more often that It'll stop working and I'll have a rebound or more often, that I'll have a heart attack tomorrow.  :o

Has anyone else delt with this, and if so, have they had better luck convincing the nay-sayers about how awesome CBL is? I feel like I need a better plan of attack for my next encounter...

What about moderate to intense cardio thats less than 30mins in length? Same effects? Similar, but to a lesser extent?

P.S. I showed this to a friend and he goes "Whatever. I don't believe that."
The few examples I see here about people running to lose their chub revolve around (apparently) males who where chubby kids and started some type of program in which they ran.

The research is quite clear on this: cardio, at a level of moderate to intense (moderate, in the literature starts at 65% of max heart rate) for 30 minutes plus decrease fat burning in all cells, increase tGLUT concentration but decreases it's mobility in membranes, down regulates metabolism, down regulates testoterone, decreases the thermic effect of food and decreases muscular sensitivity to catecholamines (epinephrine, norephinephrine, specifically). All these effects together are detrimental to anyone, whether their goal is purely aesthetic or not.

Well controlled studies have also show that running does not contribute to body fat loss for over 9 months and any loss of fat can be directly attributed to changes in diet.

Well before i would consume like 1-2 rockstar zeros and those have ace k in them, this was while losing the winter coat to a more appreciable look. So yeah i have switched to mainly Coffee and Spike(no ace k). Not really noticing a big difference. So i was trying to figure out if there is a level that causes. oh well.

I don't know if there is an exact level. I know the guys over at Propane Fitness did some digging and figured out you'd need to drink something like 6 Liters of cola to get enough ace-k in to cause a spike. I know I've been one who's been trying to push Kiefer to give a little more insight on their findings, but it seems to have fallen on deaf ears and/or he's waiting for more evidence and until then is siding on caution.

Regardless he states in the book that you can consume energy drinks pre-workout (in moderation) so I always drink a monster/rockstar before I workout. I'm kinda stuck between SA and DB with regards to what I'm trying to accomplish while CBL'ing but so far it hasn't affected my results at all.  8)

Muscle Building / Re: Question on Barbell Rows
« on: July 01, 2012, 04:27:15 PM »
You also have to remember that that closer your chest is to parallel with the floor the more your posterior chain is involved. You are supporting the weight of the barbell AND your torso for the duration of the lift (you mentioned doing them with 45's so lowballing it were talking 185lbs if you add the bar and your torso). If you are doing sets of 8+ reps with good form (controlled movement, not jerking up and down) that can turn into a long set and even though it's only an isometric contraction, your hammy's, glutes and spinal erectors are gonna be doing a decent amount of work and they'll def get a good burn.

Personally I view bent over rows as a great overall back exercise for this very reason. If you wanna eliminate the lower back strain you could always swap them out for chest supported rows.

Carb Back-Loading™ / Re: what kind of workout warrants a backload?

Big Tex mentioned in the Programs section something about working with 70+% of your 1RM, but I dont know how much volume at this intensity is needed

70% is fair estimate, personally I just go by rep totals.

For example: I make sure to perform at least 2-3 multi-joint core lifts at 4x6-10 at the begining of each training session. I figure if I'm reaching muscular failure around 10 reps or less I'm probably getting enough tGlut translocation. Busting out 15+ reps each set will most likely not be heavy enough.

Just my opinion based on a couple months of experimentation.

Results! / Re: 6 Weeks down... Absurdity.
« on: June 27, 2012, 01:33:11 PM »
Awesome results! I've spent countless hours prepping food for the week on previous diets... 8oz of chicken and 1cup cooked brown rice every 3 hours, with an AM Cardin session, then lifting and a second cardio session in the PM... No time for anything other than work, cooking, training, and eating.

I'm 5'8" and started at 240lbs at god only knows what body fat, down as low as 173 (skinny fat), and muscled up to 185. I've been stuck at 10% for 6 months, and felt like I've just been going through the rigorous prep work just to maintain.

Thanks--you've got a solid start yourself bro.

Really in my opinion, the best part of this diet is thats it's just a way to live, not even a diet really. Last night I went to Dime-a-dog night for the triple A club in town and ate 10 hotdogs with no guilt! No counting, no measuring, just worked out before, and pounded dogs at the park.

You've found the right "diet" here for sure...

ONE MORE QUESTION:

Is there any reason to take a break from taking creatine?
I've heard that creatine transporters do not work so well when you're non-stop on creatine.

Sounds like your buddy is living proof of the justification-of-effort effect.
He put a bunch of effort and struggle into achieving his goals with a conventional diet. And when being told there might be an easier way to do it, he instinctively have to justify all the hard work he put in by defending what he did.

I agree wholeheartedly. He's been piggin out for several weeks now, because he couldn't keep eating/living the way he was when he was on his diet. He was a hermit, that spent more time obsessing over food then he did living his life. He even admitted that he couldn't keep doin what he was doing, which is why he stopped and has put back on 10lbs.

I'll keep trying to get him to give CBL a shot, but I just think what you said verbatum has him convinced that the way he went about it was better.

Congrats on your progress!  What type of training are you doing?  Shockwave? 5/3/1? Or the like?
Also, any hit cardio?
Thanks

I'm actually doing my own thing with regards to training. I wrote about it in Programs/Protocols a little bit, but it's based off of a program I read about called Need/Feed. It combines heavy, multi-joint movements with high rep/short rest sets at the end. Heavy movements overload the muscles and the higher reps at the end pump them full of blood so you get the best of both worlds. For example if I were training Chest/Tri's my routine would look like this:

Need
Close Grip bench 5x5
Weighted Dips 5x6-8
Neutral Grip DB Bench 4x6-8
DB Overhead Extension 4x8-10
Feed
Incline Fly 3x20, 30 sec rest
Rope Pushdown 3x20, 30 sec rest
Single Arm Pushdown 3xFail (alternate each arm with no rest for all 3 sets)
Close Grip push-up 3xFail (with hands elevated on bench, because I'm normally dead at this point)

I love the workout because I get my heavy movements in, so i can still track progress and strength gains but I'm also getting that pump everyone is always chasing in the gym.

As far as HIIT goes, I haven't done one ounce of cardio since i started. I tore my right quadriceps a month and a half back, and I'm still rehabing so no running, at least not sprinting, yet. Honestly though, I probably wouldn't of done it anyways cause i hate cardio haha. As my bodyfat continues to drop, I probably won't be able to get away with rookie mistakes I made and I'm sure I'll start doing a little bit of HIIT as well, but for now I am sans cardio.
