Episode #7: All Q&A !
« on: May 14, 2012, 11:12:58 PM »
Air Date: 5/15/2012  (QUESTIONS CLOSED!)

This time around, we're going to pick out a lot of questions from the forums to answer in the podcast. We'll probably start the show with some science and health news and then move to Q&A when we're feeling all scienced up.

If you have questions about nutrition and training, post them up here tonight or tomorrow morning -- before Tuesday at 10am PST -- and we'll try to answer as many as we can.

Listening live? You can go to  the DH Facebook group and post questions there.

Or if you prefer twitter, send me (Naomi) a tweet at @nthmostfit

From CaseyD in another thread:

Quote
From the "Is Carb Nite Right for you?" article, Kiefer states:

"One thing Carb Nite is not good for (not yet anyway) is gaining muscle. I have tried multifarious methods to grow muscle while on Carb Nite without success. I was flying blind because there was no guiding research. But now, there is newer research that might offer an opportunity of muscle growth while on Carb Nite and I’m going to give it another go."

It would seem that Carb Nite, as written, will not build muscle for you. Just wondering if there has truly been progress made on this, or are we now talking about certain tweaks you can make - making it not really CNS?

Would like to know more about the study you mentioned in the Jim Laird podcast about static stretching causing degradation of muscle tissue.  I'm all about dynamic warm-ups myself, but I'm trying to figure out how you can quantify that.  Also, based on that study, are we to then believe that PNF stretching is better or worse because of what it does to the golgi tendon organ?

Detox:  grass fed beef, DHA enriched eggs, bacon, 1/4 cup "some kind of pepper".  Please explain how you came up with this, how it is beneficial, and when you would prescribe it for a client.  Especially the "some kind of pepper" part.

Is there an easy way to explain the hormonal and metabolic differences happening between CNS and CBL?  You mentioned they were vastly different.

How are mTOR and carrier mediated autophagy directly related?

how can people with the following ailments do on CNS, and how would you modify their diets if need be:

chronic acid reflux
crohn's/colitis
high blood pressure
vegetarian (I know, not an ailment)
high VLDL cholesterol
pregnancy
breastfeeding

Could processed foods kill progress? i.e. pepperoni, salami, hot dogs even, etc

Along the above lines, should we be looking to intake uncured bacon since grass fed beef is suggested?

If no progress is being seen on CNS what should be the first aspect to look at?

With the more performance oriented CNS (meaning most of us that don't sit on the couch) would it be better to scatter calories through day or back load calories after big workout?

Updates on software?

Updates on any slots open for one on ones?

If  Q= mc(delta)T and (delta)U= Q + W do I need to move to a warmer state? lol

If fat is so good at preserving the body, going a 1000 calories below maintenance would still be ok correct?

Does it make a difference metabolically with regards to mTOR at the 12-14 hour fasting mark whether you ingest fast digesting fats like mct oil or slow digesting like heavy cream? is one type preferable over the other?

What is the optimal carb timing for a (small) backload?

Is it optimal to have very distinct separate meals, and give the insulin time to clear blood glucose, or is it better to keep snacking though the evening, keeping a steady flow of carbs and inulin? Is there any difference, or does it not really matter all that much?

^I'd like to know this as well!

About ELECT: I don't have the equipment to do the entire shockwave program, but I try to incorporate some of the elements in my training. When doing ELECT, how many sets should I do? Just one set of 3+3+3+3+3, then move on to the next exercise?

Edit: I feel like this has been answered in another biojacked, or at least on the forums. I'm going to look for the answer elsewhere. :)

+1 to the ELECT movements and to the timing of backloads. Especially towards Carb Nite.

For ELECT, do each small "rep" count towards a percentage to a 1RM, like 75%-95%, or stick to one percentage to increase strength/hypertrophy?

Hope you don't mind if I piggy back on this question too sir, to add to it would it be ideal then to intake both? For those who are "sensitive" to dairy, would Unsalted butter/grass-fed Unsalted butter be better as the slow digesting fat source?

When talking about the Central Nervous System, how do you know you "over did it"? Since it would seem to hinder progress having cortisol levels up. Any signs one should look for?

Curious, is there going to be an updated version of Carb Nite? Especially for those who train.

What should someone do to "kick-start" fat loss if progress has stalled? Same question to gaining size/strength.
